Veteran Developer Jake Song Ships AI-Coded "Open MMO" on GitHub
Jake Song, the celebrated developer behind iconic MMORPGs like 'Nexus: The Kingdom of the Winds' and 'Lineage,' has unveiled his latest project, "Open MMO," on GitHub. Released on July 20, 2026, the solo-developed MMORPG is generating significant buzz for its innovative use of AI in its creation and gameplay. Song employed a method he calls "Vibe Coding," where AI, specifically Fable 5 (Claude's top model), handles the programming, allowing for a more agentic development process rather than traditional manual coding.
"Open MMO" is designed around the core philosophy of "equivalence of AI agents and humans," meaning AI-controlled characters connect and interact with the server using the exact same protocol as human players, making them indistinguishable to the server. This intriguing design aims to tackle the "empty-world problem" often faced by nascent MMOs, populating the world with intelligent, interactive agents from the outset. The game features a 32km × 32km procedurally generated world, a 3D quarter-view perspective, seven character classes, and stat allocation via dice rolls, reminiscent of classic 'Ultima'-style MMORPGs. While currently an early experiment, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the future of LLM-assisted game development and dynamic, AI-populated virtual worlds.
